Since the war on terror began, the accident rate for Marine and Army aviation has increased dramatically. The Army rate went from 1.03 (accidents causing at least a million dollars of damage) per 100,000 flying hours to 2.58. The Marine rate went from 1.40 to 4.01. The Marines fly the more accident prone AV-8 Harrier, and have older helicopters than the Army. Both services have increased the tempo of operations, both in the field and in training. Both services are having problems getting all the spare parts they need, particularly the Marines.
