Marines: November 22, 1999

Archives

In a budget cutting move, the Marines have been removed from most Navy warships. They are no longer present to run the brig, teach marksmanship, keep order, set an example, man secondary weapons, render honors, lead landing parties, or provide security when docked. Sea School, the most honored of Marine institutions, where young Marines learned Navy technology and terminology, has ended. After 225 years, the Marines no longer do the job they were originally formed to do. --Stephen V Cole

The Marine Warfighting Laboratory (Quantico) is developing a new recon system. Delivered behind enemy lines by a parasail, the system would have one or more cameras providing 360 coverage. Datalinks will provide two-way communications. Intelligence officers will be able to turn the cameras and tell the sensor what to photograph, and the photos will then be transmitted by digital signal back to the intelligence types. --Stephen V Cole
