The Army plans to deploy one of its medium brigades to Europe by 2007, where it will replace a heavy mechanized brigade. The point is to have a readily deployable formation in a position closer to potential trouble spots, allowing it to be moved more quickly. It is also likely that one of the two medium brigades currently being formed will be sent to Balkan peacekeeping duty (assuming that the US doesn't find a way to get out of that task) by 2004 in order to shake out the new organization.--Stephen V Cole
