The Air Force reports that tests have shown that its Airborne Laser will actually work. The ABL mounts a huge laser in a ball turret on the nose of the 747 aircraft. The key technology is a system to modulate the beam to eliminate atmospheric effects and extend the range. --Stephen V Cole
