Israel and Turkey want to develop a joint missile defense system (primarily aimed at Iran's new Shahab missiles, but also at any remaining missiles Iraq may have). This system would include airborne and satellite sensors, Patriot and Arrow missiles, and some kind of system to detect missile launches and destroy the missiles during their first minute of flight. The US is encouraging the move but is resisting Israeli pressure to allow the sale of Arrow to Turkey. The US is concerned over the political cost of supporting Turkey and wants to sell more Patriot-3s.--Stephen V Cole
