Pakistan has placed its locally designed and built Hatf IV (Shaheen I) medium range (800 kilometers) ballistic missile into service. Built with technical assistance from North Korea and China, the Hatf IV can carry a nuclear warhead weighing up to half a ton. The missile has been in development since the mid-1990s, with the first test launch in 1997. The missile is believed to be based on the Chinese DF-15 (29 feet long, range of 500 kilometers and weighs 6.2 tons.)
