Infantry: July 2, 2003

The prospect of more urban warfare in the future, and the success of the Israelis in developing new urban warfare tactics in the last few years, has led to the development of many new tools for the infantry. One of the more pressing needs is for explosive devices to enable troops to quickly get through exterior and interior walls and ceilings of buildings. One new item being developed is the BEAST, which is a 2x5 foot nylon blanket with diamond shaped explosives embedded in the fabric. Adhesives come with the blanket to allow it to be quickly attached to a wall or ceiling, and detonated with standard fuses or blasting caps. The BEAST weighs 16 pounds and can produce a window sized hole in most interior walls and ceilings, but further testing is needed before releasing it to the troops (who have long been known to improvise similar wall breaching techniques using available explosives.)
