Information Warfare: March 27, 2002

Archives

On March 22, 2002, a large (125,000 separate attacks) assault via the Internet was made on computer networks at Wright Patterson air force base. The air force's defenses held, and it was thought the large number of separate attacks might have just been an attempt to shut down the base networks. But since the base is also home to the U.S. government's largest supercomputer, it was also thought the attackers were trying to obtain information about that. The air force will not release any information on their response to the attack, as the investigation is apparently still going on. This was the largest Internet attack the air force has experienced so far this year.
