August 18, 2010:
Iraq has received the first three of twenty Serbian Lasta 95 propeller driven trainer aircraft. The Lasta 95 is a 1.6 ton, two seat aircraft with a max speed of 345 kilometers an hour. It has two hard points for 200 kg (440 pounds) of bombs or rockets. But the Lasta 95 is primarily a trainer. The Lasta 95 deal is part of a $235 million Serbian sale to Iraq, that includes the 20 Lasta 95s, uniforms, ammo, small arms and other military equipment.
Between 1991 and 2004, Serbia exported much greater quantities of military equipment and services to Iraq. This was all illegal, as Iraq was under an arms embargo. But Yugoslavia, then Serbia (after Yugoslavia came apart in the 1990s), needed the money and Iraq needed the weapons. The current Serbian sales to Iraq are all legal.
