Two new combat cargo ships are being placed in service. Named for Medal of Honor winners from the Korean War, the USNS Mendonca and USNS Pililaau are 950 feet long and carry 62,000 tons of cargo. These are surge ships intended to carry military cargo to a combat theater, rather than pre-positioned ships loaded with unit equipment.--Stephen V Cole
