A group of Taliban tried to kill a former Afghan military commander in the southeast. This triggered a pursuit by Afghan troops and American warplanes and helicopters. About twelve Taliban were killed, in another demonstration of how effective the army organization for combat was. The army has new radios, and troops trained to get in touch with American backup forces quickly.
