Archives

A fascinating report from Radio Free Europe that appears to confirm what many observers (and Romanians) have long suspected. RFE says that the Romanian National College for the Study of the Securitate Archives has released two lists naming current Romanian politicians who were either Securitate officers or informers. Included on one list were five current leaders in the nationalist Great Romania Party and four members of the Party for Social Democracy (governing party). Of course, this situation has occurred throughout Eastern Europe, especially revelations that current politicians acted as informers. However, Romania is something of a special case given the number of former Securitate officers that have risen to high offices or prominent party leadership.
