In a major violation of the Macedonian ceasefire, on April 28 NLA guerrillas killed eight Macedonian soldiers and paramilitary police in the village of Vejce (near Tetovo on the Kosovo border). Six other troops were wounded. After action reports said the firefight lasted ten minutes and occurred around 1800 hours. On April 29, the Macedonian government said that more military patrols were being conducted in the area. NATO and KFOR condemned the ambush. On April 30, the NLA acknowledged the action, claiming the troops had entered a rebel held zone. On May 1, in the city of Bitola, a four-hour long riot broke out. Macedonian Slavs attacked Albanian shops in the city. Western news sources reported that the riot was in response to the funerals of the soldiers killed in the NLA attack.
