Kyrgyzstan believes that the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan still has 2000 members hiding out in remote parts of Afghanistan. The militants have been making annual trips from camps in Afghanistan to the fertile Ferghana Valley, which is shared by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. There is some dispute over just how many members of the movement are actually alive and capable of operating.
