In the eastern Uzbek town of Andijan, armed men attacked the prison and freed nearly all  of the 2,000 prisoners held there. The attackers were after  23 of their kinsmen held in the prison, who had been accused of being Islamic terrorists. The attackers were apparently from a group of demonstrators that had been protesting the imprisonment of these 23 men.  The attack on the prison brought more people out on the street to protest the government, and demand that the government resign.
