China continues to do whatever it takes to get into the World Trade Organization (WTO) . This is at odds with predictions that China is itching to go to war over Taiwan. Joining the WTO integrates China's economy more tightly with the world economy. Thus a war with Taiwan would do much more economic damage than if China stayed out of the WTO. For the last several decades, China's leaders have recognized that the biggest threat to their power is a poorly performing economy. This is nothing new and has been a constant throughout Chinese history.
