The ELN has quit peace talks with the government to protest recent reverses at the hands of the AUC. The ELN has insisted that the government go to war against the AUC. The army is accused of working with the AUC, even though the official government policy is to not even negotiate with the AUC. But since the AUC has been more successful against leftist rebels than the army, it is difficult for the government to, in effect, go to war against the AUC as an ally of leftist groups that are trying to overthrow the government (the AUC is not trying to overthrow the government.) The ELN has, however, freed 34 oil workers it kidnapped recently.
