India has offered to evacuate the 37,000 Sri Lankan troops from the Jaffna peninsula of the Sri Lankan government requests it. Such an evacuation would be a major defeat for the Sri Lankan army, and India would do it only if both sides observed a ceasefire. India does not want to get involved fighting in Sri Lanka. In 1987, India did send troops to Sri Lanka to police a peace agreement. But the LTTE began fighting again and some 1,200 Indian soldiers died before the Indians withdrew in 1990. Meanwhile, in Kashmir, several incidents left eight rebels, four civilians and one soldiers dead and 17 others injured..
