Pakistan has released some details of its Shaheen-I and Shaheen-II medium-range ballistic missiles. Shaheen-I is 12m long, 1m in diameter, has a range of 600km, carries a 750kg warhead, and has a Circular Error Probable of 200m. Shaheen-II is a two-stage missile, 17m long with a diameter of 1.4m, has a range of 2,500km, carries a 1000kg warhead, and has a Circular Error Probable of 350m. Both are solid-fuel missiles. In both cases (as with the Scud) the warhead separates after re-entry and is spun by four small rockets to stabilize it. Analysts think it likely that both versions of Shaheen use strap-down inertial guidance with GPS receivers. Pakistan insists that it developed the missiles entirely on its own, but US intelligence is convinced that the Chinese provided much of the technology.--Stephen V Cole
