Efforts by Pakistan to stop Afghan refugees from entering are failing. Some 5,000 Afghans a day are getting in. False documents, bribes and pleas for mercy from the refugees (who are mostly women, children and the elderly) are getting more people past border guards. Other refugees sneak in through unguarded areas. Some 60,000 Afghans have gotten into Pakistan so far. Meanwhile, Pakistani officials are talking with Taliban leaders about forming a new, more moderate, government in Afghanistan.
