India-Pakistan: October 26, 2001

India is concerned that the insurgency in Kashmir may get forgotten in the wake of the Afghan War. The US needs Pakistan to conduct the war; it doesn't need help from India although the Indians offered it. (Moslem nations warned the US that cooperation with India would not be acceptable.) A Moslem suicide bomber set off a bomb in Srinigar on 1 Oct; the US refused Indian pressure to publicly link the bombing to Pakistan. While the US says bin Laden and al Qaeda is the priority, India claims that bin Laden is behind the recent violence in Kashmir. The bombing was claimed by the group known as Mohammad's Army. This group was founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in March 2000, just after he was released in a prisoner swap for a hijacked Indian airliner. India complains that while the US is adding groups linked to bin Laden to its list of terrorist organization, it won't add Islamic groups linked to the violence in Kashmir such as the Army of the Pure, People's Army, and Al Badr to the list.--Stephen V Cole
