In Pakistan, a referendum held to vote for or against general Musharraf serving another five years as president resulted in a 56 percent turnout and 97.5 percent for Musharraf. Most anti-Musharraf parties urged their members to boycott the election. The opposition says the vote was rigged, and in part it probably was. But opinion polls indicate Musharraf has the backing of most of the population and the vote tends to reflect that. Meanwhile, Islamic radicals in Pakistan held some small demonstrations to protest American participation in raids to capture Taliban and al Qaeda members in the tribal areas along the Afghan border. Meanwhile, ethnic and religious violence in the Pakistani city of Karachi resulted in four bombings and one death. Two bombs went off yesterday, but there were no deaths.
