India-Pakistan: August 23, 2002

India said Pakistan's claim of an Indian army attack on Pakistani army positions along the Kashmir Line of Control were a fabrication. India feels that Pakistan did this to impress an American diplomat touring the region.

In Kashmir, both sides continued firing artillery, machine-guns and mortars across the Line of Control, leaving one Pakistani civilian dead.

Pakistan's president Musharraf has apparently survived his changing the constitution and giving himself another five years in office. Most Pakistanis have never experienced a working democracy (unless they have lived in Europe or North America) and are willing to tolerate a military dictator if that will improve the economy and public safety.
