India has completed building 1600 kilometers of barbed wire fencing along the Bangladesh border. That's about a third of the total border and the "most sensitive" (easiest to cross) sections. The rest of the border is to be fenced by 2007. India has long complained that Bangladesh tolerates illegal immigration into India, as well as Indian rebel groups establishing camps in Bangladesh and freely moving across the border. The fence is more symbolic than effective, as most of it is unguarded. But along most of it's length, it provides visible evidence of where the border is.
