A suicide bomber tried to kill Pakistans prime minister-designate, but failed. However, eight other people were killed, and over three dozen wounded. A group calling itself "Islambouli Brigades of al-Qaeda" later took credit for the attack. Hours before the attack, the Pakistani government announced arrest of Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian accused of participation in the 1998 East African bombing of two American embassies. Pakistan will not turn  Ghailani over to the United States, as it usually does with al Qaeda suspects it captures, until it has a chance to interrogate him, and examine the computer, a disks, it captured with him. The U.S. has offered a $25 million reward for the capture of Ghailani.
