  Violence in the Malukus increased, with today's fighting killing at least 20 and wounding over a hundred. Opposing groups of from a few dozen to a few hundred men, armed with everything from machetes to assault rifles, go after each other. Many Malukans are calling for independence as a way to solve their problems, mainly because of the Moslem extremists coming from other parts of Indonesia and the increasing number of soldiers joining in the fighting. In the capital, hundreds of Moslems rioted, causing property damage.
