President Wahid denied accusations that he is guilty of corruption. But evidence piles up that he did have some involvement in corrupt practices and demonstrations demanding his resignation are becoming more frequent and violent. The legislature is also moving slowly towards impeachment. Indonesia is one of the more corrupt nations on the planet, but many Indonesians thought that popular religious scholar Wahid would be above it all. Meanwhile, victims of Maluku violence held a press conference and accused army troops of going on a rampage in a Moslem neighborhood after a marine was wounded by a sniper on January 19th. The troops are accused of subsequently killing 14 Moslems and wounding 27 more. Moslems attacked the troops on January 22nd, and ten more civilians were killed.
