Syrian intelligence chief General Ali Douba has been forced into retirement; he had opposed the defacto selection of President Assad's son Bashir as the next president. Douba was replaced by his deputy, General Assef Shawkat, who happens to be Assad's son-in-law. --Stephen V Cole
