The PKK said it would not end its "struggle" with the Turkish government. A PKK source said that the Turkish government refuses to engage in political talks with the PKK. The British government at least talked to the Irish Republican Army. Meanwhile, the PKK continues its bombing campaign in southern Turkey. On August 5 the PKK detonated a bomb outside a military guesthouse in Hakkari province (on the Iraqi border). Turkish sources reported five soldiers died in the attack.

Kurdish "unrest" continues in Iran. Western news sources reported that four Iranian policemen died in the Iranian town of Urmia on August 7. The circumstances were unclear, but one report said the policemen were "fighting separatists."
