Refugees from the chaotic fighting are becoming a problem. There are (estimated) 50,000 refugees around the capital, 50,000 elsewhere in the country and another 68,000 in neighboring countries (30,000 in Sierra Leone 20,000 in Guinea, 16,000 in Ivory Coast and so on.) The war has reduced about 75 percent of the population to extreme poverty.
