Since the army entered the war with the Maoist rebels in November, 2001, over 4,600 rebels have been killed. The army has lost 244 soldiers and 15 officers. Between 1996, and November, 2001, 1,026 rebels died fighting police. Overall, 7,774 people have died in rebel related violence since 1996. The rebels maintain their strength by offering hope to young people that a new government will end the poverty and monarchy that has long existed in Nepal.
