The Maoist rebels have agreed to respect a constitutional monarchy and democracy. Peace talks next month are to discuss how to deal with the rebel demands and the rebels themselves, and the destruction of the monarchy was long a rebel demand. The rebels have also relented on their desire for a "people's republic" (communist dictatorship.) The big demands now are land and economic reform. The rebels also want the king to allow the political parties to form a government, something the parties were unable to do after the last elections.
