So far, the king has retained support of the police and military. This is because the king has vowed to do whatever it takes to defeat the Maoist rebels. Already a poor country, the Maoists are determined to terrorize the population, and trash the economy, to gain their objectives (a communist dictatorship, and a mass killing and expulsion of "enemies of the people.") Allies of Nepal are threatening to cut off aid to Nepal if the king does not return power to elected officials. The king does not seem to care. The politicians do not have enough popular support to easily overthrow the king (who is still popular with many Nepalese.)
