Religious riots broke out in northern Kaduna province, mainly in the capital Kaduna, where about half the population is Christian. A dawn to dusk curfew was declared, but local police appeared to lack the manpower to control the situation. Gunfire, shouting and out of control fires were present all night. Meanwhile, a second province, Niger, has adopted Sharia law. The federal government announced it planned to double the size of the national police force to 160,000 men over the next three years.
