A ceasefire has been arranged in the southwest between Yoruba factions fighting over land ownership and political disputes. Some 80 people have died in the last three weeks because of these disputes. Meanwhile, Zamfara state has continued to apply Sharia law, including amputating the hand of a thief, despite calls from the central government not to. Non-Moslems have urged the president to take the issue to the Supreme Court to get a final decision. That is a gamble, as it could go either way and there is no appeal from the Supreme Court.
