 A former ambassador, Obi Odu, was arrested in the southeast as he was caught leading a group of 22 young men who were burning down the houses of people who were thought to have voted against Odu in recent provincial elections. Odu was running for governor. Nigerian politics still has elements of tribal warfare in it, especially since the winner is expected to plunder the public assets for his followers. Thus cheating at elections is seen as legitimate because the stakes are winner take all.
