Tribal violence in the city of Warri, in the oil region of the Niger river delta, has left at least 30 dead and created over 3,000 refugees. Another battalion of soldiers has been sent to the area to help restore order. Part of the problem is caused by the growing oil smuggling activity which now moves at least 30,000 barrels of stolen oil a day to neighboring Ivory Coast. The two countries are beefing up their land and naval border patrols to interrupt the smuggling. Tribal factions in the Niger delta are fighting over who should control the oil racket.
