In the south, troops clashed with NPA rebels, leaving one soldier dead. Army attacks on MNLF rebels have left 113 dead, and several hundred MNLF rebels trapped in a compound in Zamboanga. Former MNLF leader Nur Misuari angered most MNLF members against him because of his inept rule of Moslem areas in the southern Philippines. Earlier this year, the MNLF removed Misuari as MNLF leader. Recently, the government held new elections to replace Misuari as governor. Misuari's followers armed themselves and attempted to keep Misuari in power. The main reason was money, as the armed followers were benefiting from Misurai's corrupt rule.
