Guatemala's URNG guerrillas signed a peace accord in 1996 (ending 36 years of civil war), but have been disappointed at the results. Some of the former left-wing guerrillas have taken to kidnapping. Some captured kidnappers, identified as former members of the URNG, said they were trying to raise money to start a new insurgency, but the new URNG political party said that this was false, and that the government was trying "to put a political spin to a simple crime".--Stephen V Cole
