Hundreds of Chechens fled villages for refugee camps just across the border in Ingushetia. The refugees said Russian police were searching for those responsible for a bombing on July 2nd that killed five policemen. Hundreds were arrested and interrogates, and all but 40 men were later released. Many of the rebels are part time, living in nearby villages. The police terrorize the villagers to try and discourage rebel attacks. Some of those arrested are severely beaten and others are killed. Elsewhere in Chechnya, three Russian policemen and three rebels were killed in several incidents.
