On September 11 Hutu rebels launched an attack in Bujumbura's southeastern Kanyosha district. One government soldier died, ten rebels were killed, and one civilian. Three other government soldiers were wounded. Western reports said the rebels came from the Kabezi commune south of Bujumbura. The assault was apparently supported by mortar fire. On September 15 Burundian government forces counter-attacked around the Kabezi commune. The counter-attack concluded on September 18, with a "sweep operation" in the Kanyosha district. An army spokesman said around 50 rebels were killed in three days of fighting.
