Somalia: Al Qaeda Terrorists Arrested After Gun Battle

September 24, 2005: One of the terrorist suspected arrested in Somaliland turned out to be a wanted al Qaeda leader, who had been trained in Afghanistan. This mans name was not released.

September 23, 2005: In the northern breakaway state of Somaliland, police raided a house, and, after a gun battle, captured four suspected al Qaeda suspects. A fifth suspect was captured elsewhere. Police said the terror suspects were planning to kill government officials and foreigners. The suspects had moved from Mogadishu, and are believed to be the "al Qaeda cell" that counter-terror organizations had been reporting as active in Somalia.

September 20, 2005: The hijacked UN cargo ship docked in Mogadishu, with the pirates still on board. The pirates reneged on a deal, and made new demands. Police arrested some of the pirates, but negotiations continue. Apparently the pirates want to sell some, or all, of the cargo of rice in the Mogadishu markets.

September 16, 2005: After three months of negotiations, a cargo ship, carrying food relief for the UN, was released by pirates. The ship proceeded to Mogadishu to unload deliver its 850 tons of rice. The transitional government negotiated a deal with local leaders (representing the pirates).

September 14, 2005: In Jowar, where the transitional government has said up shop, local warlord Mohamed Dheere's tried to increase his "tax" on locals, sparking fighting which left six dead and five wounded. Meanwhile, the new government is trying to train several hundred militiamen to be professional soldiers.
