The government says it has lost 187 dead and 860 wounded so far in the latest battles with rebels. Other military reports indicated that losses were as high as 217 dead and 1600 wounded. The losses were the result of unexpected heavy rebel resistance to a new government offensive in Jaffna. Rebel losses are reported to be some one hundred dead and several hundred wounded.
