: Ugandan State minister for Defense Ruth Nankabirwa said that the army would not leave the Sudan until it flushed out Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels - two days after expiry of a May 18 deadline agreed between Kampala and Khartoum.

Sudanese military officers, including a Brigadier General, were in Gulu on 19 May to meet their Ugandan counterparts. Army Commander Major General James Kazini told Kampala newspaper The Monitor in a separate interview that the Sudanese had virtually agreed to renew the protocol for further 45 days.

On 22 May, Kanzini announced the extension as fact: if in the next 45 days Kony does not surrender, he will either be killed or starve to death. - Adam Geibel
