- In 1935 the ratio of major generals to other soldiers in the allegedly backward Spanish Army was 1-to-5,012, while that in the British Army was 1-to-2,350.
- The ancient Chinese general Wu Ch'i once beheaded a man who had ventured into the enemy camp to kill two of their men, because "He acted without orders."
- The first woman aviator to shoot down an enemy aircraft was Lidia Litviak, on 13 September 1942, one of two kills she shot got that day
- So tough an old sea dog was Admiral J�o Tamandare � the Farragut of Brazil � that instead of sleeping with a pillow, he used a block of wood on which to rest his head.
- During the First World War about 310,000 Italians who had migrated to other lands returned to their native soil to serve, including nearly 90,000 from the United States and one from Siam.
- Knowing of his penchant for throwing them overboard when angry, the staff of Admiral Zinovy Petrovich Rozhestvensky arranged to bring along 50 extra pairs of binoculars on the ill-fated voyage of the Russian Fleet from the Baltic to its disastrous defeat by the Japanese off Tsu-Shima in 1905.
- In 1940 Donald Bailey of Britain's Royal Engineers used an Erector Set to design the portable bridge that will forever bear the name "Bailey Bridge."
- During World War II the U.S. Army Remount Service, which traditionally supplied horses for the cavalry and artillery, provided 3,222 steeds to the Coast Guard, for use on beach patrols.
