- Apparently as late as 1900, French Army officers were not permitted to marry unless their brides provided a dowry of at least fr 1,200.
- At one point during his tenure as Governor General of India, Lord Cornwallis, known to Americans as the man who surrendered at Yorktown, received an honorarium of £42,000 for defeating local rebels, which he promptly distributed to his troops.
- In order to continue to serve researchers under blackout conditions, during World War II the windows of the main reading room of the New York Public Library were painted black, which was not removed until the late 1980s.
- Richard Thomas Glyn, who commanded the British 24th Regiment of Foot the South Wales Borderers during the late 1860s and the 1870s, was perhaps the shortest man in the British Army, being only 52 tall.
- In 1848 a riot among the cadets of the French military academy at Saint-Cyr resulted in 70 of them a majority of the corps being dismissed and forced to serve as enlisted men.
- In 1918 Admiral Sir David Beatty, Commanding the Grand Fleet, presented the USS Texas (BB-34) with an English bulldog named Jim Texas, who served as the ship's mascot for many years
- In addition to being a philosopher of considerable note, Melissus of Samos also served as commander of his citys navy, which he led to victory over an Athenian fleet in 442 B.C., when he was only about 30.
- During the First World War, 33 male members of the von Bulow family died in the service of their Kaiser.
