- Prior to being admitted to Annapolis in 1856, 15-year old Alfred Thayer Mahan had done so well in two years at Columbia University that he was permitted to skip the normal first year's program, becoming the only midshipman in the history of the Naval Academy to do so.
- In 1096 Pope Urban II condemned the use of the crossbow against Christians, though he did permit it to be used against non-believers.
- Between August 9, 1914, and November 30, 1918, Britain shipped 25� million tons of all types of supplies to its armies in France, of which only 5� million tons (20.6%) were ammunition whilst over 6 million tons (23.5%) were fodder and feed for horses and mules.
- Aaron Gilles de Rais, Marshal of France and friend to Joan of Arc, was burned at the stake at Nantes in 1440, having been convicted of the brutal murder of at least 200 children as part of his experiments in witchcraft.
- The silver punch bowl long used on formal occasions by the British 18th Hussars (now "consolidated" with the 13th, 15th, and 19th Royal Hussars) was captured from Joseph Bonaparte, the "King of Spain" by courtesy of his brother Napoleon, at the Battle of Vitoria (June 21, 1813), for whom it had served as a chamber pot.
- Between 1871 and 1900 France had 26 ministers of war, who served in 32 different cabinets.
- A military reformer of no mean abilities, Swedish King Eric XIV (1560-1568), proved an unsuccessful commander in the field, due primarily to his unwillingness to engage in battle with generals of lesser rank.
- Non-effectiveness rates for US Army divisional troops in Korea from July l950 to December l953 show that an average of 57.5 soldiers out of every l000 were unavailable for duty by reason of battle injury, 18.8 per 1000 by disease and 14.6 by non-battle injury.
