- Between 1793 and 1815 – the years of the “French Wars” – about half of the new officers in the Royal Navy were scions of naval families, while about 15-percent were from army families, a figure exceeded by the 17-percent who were the sons or kinsmen of clergymen.
- So that cooks could prepare meals while on the march, by the outbreak of the First World War most major armies had large soup kettles mounted on wheels and drawn by horses, which in the German Army were affectionately nicknamed “Goulash Cannon.”
- Although his portrait of Alexander the Great did not impress the king very much, when Bucephalos, the royal charger, whinnied in recognition upon seeing it, the artist Appelles said, “Your Majesty, the horse seems to have much better taste in art than you do.”
- Reportedly, over a thousand of the German “maidens” who attended the Nazi Party Congress of 1936 returned home pregnant.
- Early in 1940, Rear Adm. Wilson Brown, who would later compiled a rather impressive record as a carrier commander in 1942, proposed raising a body of maritime commandos who could conduct raids on Japanese installations by using surf boards.
- In the course of World War II, approximately 35-percent of the officers in the Red Army were killed in action.
- In December of 1959 a detail of Army Special Forces personnel conducted a mission on Ishigaki Shima, a Japanese island, in support of operations to wipe out an infestation of wild boar.
