- The first man-made device to reach the stratosphere probably occured at about 7:10 a.m. on March 23, 1918, when Germany's enormous "Paris Gun" fired its frist round at "The City of Light."
- The noted Renaissance composer Monteverdi soldiered during an expedition by the Duke of Mantua against the Turks in Hungary in 1595.
- The first aerial crossing of the English Channel occurred on January 7, 1785, when a M. Blanchard and Mr. Jefferies used a hot air balloon to cross from Dover to Calais.
