- The first man-made device to reach the stratosphere probably occured at about 7:10 a.m. on March 23, 1918, when Germany's enormous "Paris Gun" fired its frist round at "The City of Light."
- The noted Renaissance composer Monteverdi soldiered during an expedition by the Duke of Mantua against the Turks in Hungary in 1595.
- The first aerial crossing of the English Channel occurred on January 7, 1785, when a M. Blanchard and Mr. Jefferies used a hot air balloon to cross from Dover to Calais.
- In the aftermath of Operation Desert Storm, 28 Coalition minesweepers cleared a total of 1,047 Iraqi maritime mines
- When the French Army captured Madrid in 1808, one of the very first things they sent back to Paris was the sword of King Francis I, taken by the Spanish when the king surrendered to them at the Battle of Pavia on February 24, 1525.

- In 1915 Flora Sanders, an Englishwoman, was decorated with the Cross of Karageorge for her services while fighting in the Serbian 2nd Infantry Regiment against the Bulgarians.
