- From 1815 through 1821 there was an average of one duel each month between officers of the Royal Prussian Army.
- During the famous four hour long gunnery duel between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia on March 9, 1862 not a single man in either crew was killed, nor even seriously wounded.
- Between 1223 and 1292 the de Malemont family, in the Forest of Dean in England, produced an annual average of 14,000 cross bow bolts.
- The "Golden Age" Athens, roughly the 150 years from 480 B.C. to 330 B.C., found the city at war an average of two out of every three years, with no period of peace lasting so long as ten years, and one war lasting nearly 30.
- Fully 85-percent of Red Cross parcels sent to Allied P/Ws in German hands during World War I reached their intended addressees.
- In 1943 there were 20 million "Victory Gardens" in the U.S., which produced 8 million tons of produce.
- During the Mexican War, 1st Lt. U.S. Grant, one of the finest equestrians in the army, rode a horse for which he paid only $5.00, at time when mules were being bought for $35.00.
- Despite great privation among the civilian populace, during the German siege and bombardment of Paris in 1870-1871, the infant mortality rate in the city actually declined, as the municipal government imposed strict rationing.
